Baker Preserve Recognized for Unique Ecosystem

In July 2014, the Heritage Trust proudly accepted a certificate from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources recognizing the addition of the Baker Preserve into the Washington Register of Natural Area Preserves. In the higher, drier areas of the preserve, Douglas-fir trees grow in shallow soil with baldhip rose and oceanspray. This grouping is quite rare in the state: only 12 other similar sites have been documented. On a global level, the National Heritage Program ranks this association of plants as vulnerable to imperiled. Placement of the Baker Preserve in the register recognizes the dedication of Heritage Trust members to conserve and care for these features that are critical to the preservation of Washington's natural heritage.
