The Otto Preserve?>

In the year 2000, over
400 individuals, families, organizations and businesses helped the
Heritage Trust purchase and create the Otto Preserve. The Otto Preserve is
a wildlife refuge and a place for people to experience
nature.
In August 2005,
the Heritage Trust secured an option to purchase the 17 acre “Baumgart
Woods” property that borders the Otto Preserve to the north. If the Trust
could raise the funds to purchase the Baumgart Woods, a generous landowner
would donate an additional seven acres of heavily forested land along the
southeastern boundary of the Preserve. The Heritage Trust successfully
raised the funds and the Otto Preserve has been expanded from 70 acres to
94 acres.
Expanding the Otto
Preserve has conserved more open space, native forest, rich wetlands, and
groundwater resources. With the addition of the new acreage, the integrity
of the Preserve has been protected and two new walking trails have been
created: the Baumgart Woods trail and the Walden Walk
trail.
Throughout the course
of the original Otto Preserve Campaign and the more recent Otto Preserve
Expansion Campaign, it was very clear that islanders and friends of the
island care deeply about protecting the forests, fields, wetlands and open
spaces that give Lummi Island its rural character and small community
atmosphere.
We are deeply
grateful to everyone who has made the Otto Preserve possible. Thank
you.
